Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane aims for history in tonight’s UEFA Super Cup match against Sevilla as the win would make him the sixth man to win the trophy as both a coach and as a player. The legendary Frenchman already entered the history as one of the seven men who won the Champions League as the player and manager. A win against Sevilla would put Zidane in the company of Johan Cruyff, Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique and Diego Simeone.
For the third straight season, two Spanish clubs will play for the UEFA Super Cup trophy and this year it will be 2015-2016 Champions League winners Real Madrid and 2015-2016 Europa League champions Sevilla. The match, which shows how dominant Primera Division sides have been in European competitions in the past few years, will be played at the Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim, Norway. Both Real and Sevilla will play in their fifth Super Cup appearance. Tonight’s game will also be a rematch of their 2014 final played in Cardiff.
Real won that 2014 match 2-0, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring both goals. However, the three-time Ballon d’Or winner will not be in the squad tonight due to a knee injury suffered in the finals of the EURO 2016. Real Madrid will also miss few other key players like Gareth Bale, Toni Kroos, and Pepe who were given extended summer break after EURO while striker Karim Benzema is doubtful to start the match because of an injury. Fortunately, regular first team players – Captain Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, and Marcelo, will be the back four while James Rodriguez, Lucas Vazquez, and Alvaro Morata are expected to lead the attack. Los Blancos will aim to win their third UEFA Super Cup after winning previous two in 2002 and 2014.
Meanwhile, Sevilla who are battling for their second Super Cup after winning previous in 2006 are confident they will be victorious in Norway tonight as Real is decimated in terms of available players for this match. New head coach Jorge Sampaoli will reportedly deploy attacking formation with his two summer acquisitions, strikers Wissam Ben Yedder and Luciano Vietto leading the charge. Sevilla will be the first team ever to play in UEFA Super Cup for three straight years after winning the Europa League title for the past three seasons. They won this trophy back in 2006 by beating Barcelona, but their other three appearances in 2007, 2014 and 2015 had ended in losses. Real had mixed results in their preseason matches while Sevilla looks like the fitter squad in the better form as they won all six of their preseason matches so far.
