Sports News Review – Porto shocks Roma and advances into Champions League

We start sports news review from UEFA Champions League qualifications as Porto shocked Roma in Italy and advanced into the group stage. Portuguese side won 3-0 in Rome after hosts saw two of their players sent out. Captain Daniele De Rossi was shown red card in 39th minute while Emerson received exclusion in 50th minute. Monteiro in the first half and Layun and Corona in the second half scored for Porto. Bulgarian champions Ludogorets will play for the second time in team history in group stage of Champions League after they eliminated Czech side Viktoria Plzen. Plzen managed only 2-2 tonight which wasn’t enough after 2-0 loss in first leg. Monaco beat Villarreal 1-0 in Monte Carlo tonight which means Ligue 1 side advances after 2-1 victory in Spain last week.

Gareth Bale has extended his contract with Real Madrid for another five years until 2021. With Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract extension probably coming in September it means that two of the clubs biggest stars will stay at Santiago Bernabeu. Bale was awarded for his brilliant performance for Wales and Real Madrid with a salary increase, as he will now earn 10 million euros per year, equal with captain Sergio Ramos and just behind Ronaldo.

Brazilian centre-back Dante has left Wolfsburg and joined French Ligue 1 side Nice. Dante played only one season in Wolfsburg, after leaving Bayern Munich before last season.

Midfielder Marko Marin joined Olympiacos from Chelsea on a permanent deal. Marin arrived to Chelsea from Werder Bremen in 2012 but have failed to break into the first team and spent several seasons on loan at Sevilla, Fiorentina, Anderlecht and Trabzonspor.

ATP 250 tournament at WinstonSalem is the last one before US Open starts next week and today’s second round scores are: Richard Gasquet – Daniel Evans 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; Stephane Robert – Federico Delbonis 6-4, 5-7, 6-4; Pablo Carreno – Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 7-5; Diego Schwartzman – Gilles Simon 7-6, 6-1.

Lilian Calmejane of Team Direct Energie won his first ever professional stage victory while Darwin Atapuma of BMC Racing took the red jersey for the lead in general classification after stage four of the Vuelta Espana. 23-year-old Calmejane finished 15 seconds ahead of Atapuma while Chris Froome of Team Sky and the Movistar Alejandro Valverde finished together two minutes and six seconds back. That leaves Valverde second in the general classification, 29 seconds behind Atapuma while Froome trails four seconds further behind in third.
