Sports News Review – Manchester United and Newcastle drew in a goal fest

In tonight’s Premier League 21st Manchester United and Newcastle United drew 3-3 in a wonderful goal fest. Wayne Rooney scored from the penalty in 9th minute and assisted for the second to Jesse Lingard in 38th. Newcastle pulled one back through Georginio Wijnaldum in 42nd while Aleksandar Mitrovic leveled the match from penalty kick in 67th. Rooney again stepped up with beautiful long kick in 79th and Paul Dummett did the same in the 90th. In other Premier League matches tonight Aston Villa beat Crystal Palace 1-0 while West Ham continued its great form with a 3-1 away win at Bournemouth.

Newcastle United has signed 23-year-old England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City for £12 million. Shelvey signed a five-and-a-half-year deal today and will be available to manager Steve McLaren for Newcastle’s next match.

Cup giant killers Mirandes continue to shock in Copa Del Rey as they beat Deportivo La Coruna 3-0 away to advance to quarterfinals with a 4-1 aggregate win. Sevilla also booked their place in the quarterfinals with a 5-0 aggregate win over city rivals Betis.

Basketball clubs from Thessaloniki had different fortune in ULEB Eurocup tonight. PAOK beat Limoges 88-75 in Group I while their city rivals Aris were thrashed by Milano on the road 95-54 in Group J.

LaMarcus Aldridge led San Antonio Spurs with 25 points and 11 rebounds in their 106-79 win over Brooklyn Nets. This was Spurs’ eighth straight victory. In other NBA matches last night, Golden State Warriors defeated Miami Heat 111-103 for their 36th straight home win while Washington Wizards beat Chicago Bulls 114-100.

At ATP 250 tournament in Auckland 6th seed Fabio Fognini beat Joao Sousa 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 in the first round today. 5th seed Benoit Paire defeated Michael Venus 6-4, 7-6, Philipp Kohlschreiber eliminated countryman Benjamin Becker 7-6, 6-3 while 8th seed Roberto Bautista Agut eliminated defending champion Jiri Vesely 6-3, 7-5. Sam Querrey advanced to the second round with a 6-7, 7-6, 2-1 win after Aljaz Bedene retired with a leg injury.

Action kicked off at ATP 250 tournament in Sydney as 8th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov won 6-1, 6-4 over Thomaz Bellucci while Teymuraz Gabashvili eliminated 7th seed Leonardo Mayer with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Federico Delbonis beat Sam Groth 7-6, 7-6 while Nicolas Mahut defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 7-5. 6th seed Jeremy Chardy eliminated Mikhail Kukushkin 6-2, 6-3, Gilles Muller beat Borna Coric 6-1, 6-4, while James Duckworth defeated Inigo Cervantes 6-3, 6-2.

At WTA tournament in Sidney first seed Simona Halep eliminated Caroline Garcia 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 5th seed Karolina Pliskova defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-0, 8th seed Belinda Bencic beat Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3, 6-3, Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Sabine Lisicki 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, Sara Errani beat Jelena Jankovic 7-6, 7-6 while Samantha Stosur eliminated Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-2.

At WTA tournament in Hobart 2nd seed Camila Giorgi defeated Nao Hibino 6-2, 6-3, Johanna Larsson beat Margarita Gasparyan 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, Eugenie Bouchard eliminated Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4, 7-5 while 7th seed Alize Cornet defeated Veronica Cepede Royg 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

In today’s matches of European Water polo championships hosts Serbia easily dismissed Malta 20-2 in Group B. In the same group Croatia crushed France 20-5 while in Group A Netherlands beat Slovakia 6-5 and favorites Montenegro and Spain drew 8-8.

Last night Alabama defeated Clemson 45-40 and won NCAA football title for the fourth time under head coach Nick Saban. Crimson Tide also prevented Clemson Tigers to become the first team in Division I history with 15-0 record.
