Sports News Review – France in EURO 2016 semifinals

We start tonight’s sports news review from EURO 2016 as hosts France advanced in the semifinals with a 5-2 win over Iceland. Striker Olivier Giroud opened the scoring in 12th minute while scored his second in 59th. Paul Pogba in 20th minute, Dimitri Payet in 43rd and Antoine Griezmann in 45th minute also got on the scoresheet for France. The scorers for brave Iceland were Kolbeinn Sigthorsson in 56th and Birkir Bjarnason in 84th minute. France will face Germany in semifinals on Thursday.

Several transfer news came in today from across Europe –Leicester City signed Nice midfielder Nampalys Mendy who signed a four-year deal with Premier League champions; Chelsea have completed the transfer of Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi on a five-year deal. The Blues spent 40 million Euros for Belgium International. Paris Saint-Germain have completed the signing of Belgium right-back Thomas Meunier from Club Brugge on undisclosed free and Poland international midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak from Sevilla. Arsenal confirmed today they signed 21-year-old Japanese international striker Takuma Asano.

Former Arsenal captain, 34-year-old Mikel Arteta has announced his retirement from football to start a coaching role at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola. Arteta played only two minutes in Arsenal’s final match of last season, which was just his ninth appearance in Premier League in 2015-2016.

For the first time in more than 15 years there were tennis matches on Middle Sunday at Grand Slam in Wimbledon because many rain delays during last week. Yesterday’s interrupted ATP third round matches completed today – Jo Wilfred-Tsonga beat John Isner in marathon match 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, and 19-17. In other matches Lucas Pouille – Juan Martin Del Potro 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 6-1; Richard Gasquet – Albert Ramos-Vinolas 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3; Nick Kyrgios – Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4; Thomas Berdych – Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1; Jiri Vesely – Joao Sousa 6-2, 6-2, 7-5.

Third round matches of WTA matches at Wimbledon were also on program today and the scores are: Svetlana Kuznetsova – Sloane Stephens 6-7, 6-2, 8-6, Elena Vesnina – Julia Boserup 7-5, 7-5; Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova – Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-2; Coco Wandeweghe – Roberta Vinci 6-3, 6-4; Serena Williams – Annika Beck 6-3, 6-0; Ekaterina Makarova – Barbora Strycova 6-4, 6-2.

Venezuela became FIBA South American basketball champion after they beat Brazil 64-58 in last night’s finals which they hosted in Caracas.

Third day of NBA free agency brought less news than previous two – Washington Wizards acquired point guard Trey Burke in a trade with Utah Jazz whom they sent 2017 second round draft pick. Portland Trail Blazers offered Pau Gasol two-year contract worth 40 million. Minnesota, Chicago and Toronto are also in negotiations with Spanish international forward.

Peter Sagan won stage two in Normandy of the Tour de France to take the yellow jersey from Mark Cavendish in uphill finish. Cavendish finished one minute 45 seconds behind Sagan.

Lewis Hamilton had a collision with Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in the final lap of Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix before passing him to win a thrilling race. Rosberg was given a 10-second penalty and two penalty points were taken from him in the final standings. Hamilton cut the gap behind Rosberg in driver’s championship to 11 points. Max Verstappen of Red Bull and Kimi Raikkonen finished on the podium while Nico Rosberg finished fourth. Daniel Ricciardo was fifth and Jenson Button took excellent sixth place with McLaren Honda.

After all matches in group stage of FIVB Volleyball World League concluded the contestants are known for the Final Six tournament which starts in ten days. Along hosts Poland other finalists are Serbia, Brazil, France, United States and Italy.
