Sports News Review – Cilic won his first ATP Masters title

Sports news review starts with tennis – Marin Cilic won his first ATP Masters title after defeating Andy Murray in Cincinnati final in straight sets late last night.

Andy Murray was an absolute favorite to win another title, since Novak Djokovic was absent from Cincinnati. He cruised to the finals without much trouble, although it was clear he is very tired after a tough Olympic tournament, where he won another gold medal for his country. Murray didn’t drop a single set on his road to the final, while Marin Cilic dropped two, against Berdych and Dimitrov.

Cilic was a complete outsider against Murray, but he found his best performance when he needed it the most, similar to US Open tournament two years ago, where he won his maiden Grand Slam title. Cilic defeated Murray by 6:4, 7:5 and, interestingly, became the youngest ATP Masters champion among the active players at the age of 28!

In WTA Cincinnati final we also saw an upset, Karolina Pliskova defeated Angelique Kerber by 6:3, 6:1.

On ATP list there weren’t many changes, Novak Djokovic still leads in front of Andy Murray, but Stan Wawrinka is now third and Roger Federer fourth. Rafael Nadal is fifth, Milos Raonic sixth, Kei Nishikori seventh, Tomas Berdych eight, while Cincinnati champion Marin Cilic returned in the top ten, he is ninth. The top ten closes with Dominic Thiem.

On WTA list Serena Williams still leads in front of Angelique Kerber, while Garbine Muguruza is third. Agneszka Radwanska is fourth, Simona Halep fifth, while Serena’s older sister Venus is sixth. Viktoria Azarenka is seventh, while another two veterans are again in the top ten – Roberta Vinci is eighth, while Svetlana Kuznetsova is tenth. In between them is Madison Keys.

In Spanish Primera Division two matches were played tonight. Celta Vigo was defeated at home against debutant Leganes by 1:0, while Las Palmas made another big surprise by defeating Valencia 4-2 at Mestalla.

In German Cup four matches were played tonight. Hannover eliminated Kickers Offenbach on the road after extra time by 3:2, Paderborn lost at home against Sandhausen by 2:1, Zwickau lost at home against Hamburg by 1:0, while Borussia Dortmund also didn’t have any problems to eliminate Eintracht Trier on the road, the result was 3:0.

On football transfer market Juventus was pretty active today, according to Italian media. Reportedly, they will try to bring in Bastian Schweinsteiger from Manchester United on a free transfer, since new manager Jose Mourinho demoted him to the second team. Also, Juan Cuadrado is very near to continue his stay at Torino, but Juventus will have to pay another 4 million euros, instead of 3, to extend his loan. Blaise Matuidi is also Juventus’ target but they will have to pay 30 million euros to PSG for him, which is unlikely to happen at the moment.

Mauro Icardi decided to extend his deal with Inter and that is probably the biggest reinforcement Nero-Azuri will have this summer.

Joe Hart will probably leave Manchester City and sign for Everton, but the fact he isn’t the first goalie in his team didn’t hurt his chances to play for England, since new manager Sam Allardyce confirmed he will call him up for the World Cup qualifying match against Slovakia which will be played in September.
