Sports News Review – Bayern fails to secure Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich failed to secure Bundesliga title today after they managed only 1-1 draw at home against Borussia Monchengladbach. Bayern needed a win in 32nd round to confirm their fourth straight title but failed to do so. On the other side, Borussia Dortmund demolished Wolfsburg 5-1 to close the gap to five points with two rounds to go. Bayer Leverkusen defeated Hertha Berlin 2-1 to strengthen their third place and drop Hertha to fifth place after Berliners held the Champions League spot for the entire season. Schalke beat last-placed Hannover 3-1 to climb to one point behind fourth place. In other matches today Eintracht Frankfurt beat Darmstadt 2-1, Hoffenheim defeated Ingolstadt 2-1 while Mainz and Hamburger SV drew 0-0.

Newcastle United scored immensely important win to climb out of relegation zone in the English Premier League with two rounds to go. Newcastle beat Crystal Palace 1-0 while Sunderland who has game in hand drew today 1-1 at Stoke City. West Ham United continues with excellent performances this season as they beat West Bromwich Albion away 3-0 to climb to fifth place. Arsenal defeated Norwich City 1-0 to keep their third place. In other matches today, Watford beat Aston Villa 3-2 while Everton defeated Bournemouth 2-1.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are continuing their three-way race for Spanish La Liga title after all three sides won in 36th round. Barcelona and Atletico are leveled with 85 points with Barcelona leading the way due to better head-to-head record while Real is one point behind. Real Madrid beat Real Sociedad 1-0, Atletico defeated Rayo Vallecano with the same score while Barcelona beat Betis 2-0.

Torino crushed Udinese away 5-1 in opening match of Italian Serie A 36th round. In the evening match Chievo and Fiorentina drew 0-0.

This week’s ATP tournaments reached semifinals with finals coming tomorrow leading up to Masters in Madrid. ATP 250 tournament in Istanbul will have Grigor Dimitrov playing in the finals after beating Ivo Karlovic 7-6, 7-6. He will face Diego Schwartzman in the finals after Argentinian beat Federico Delbonis 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Dominic Thiem beat home favorite Alexander Zverev 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at ATP tournament in Munich semifinals and tomorrow will face another home player, Philipp Kohlschreiber who beat Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-4.

Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta will play in the finals at ATP tournament at Estoril after beating Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-3. He will face his compatriot Nicolas Almagro in the finals after other Spanish player beat Nick Kyrgios 6-3, 7-5.

Trophies were handed out today at two WTA clay-court tournaments in Prague and Rabat, Morocco. Home player Lucie Safarova beat Samantha Stosur 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in Prague finals while Timea Bacsinszky won the tournament in Rabat after defeating Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-1.

Damian Lillard scored 28 points to lead Portland Trail Blazers into the NBA Western Conference semifinals with a 106-103 win over Los Angeles Clippers last night to end the first-round playoff series with 4-2 score. Portland will play against reigning NBA champion Golden State Warriors in the second round. Dwyane Wade scored 23 points and Miami Heat won crucial game six on the road to force Game 7 against Charlotte Hornets 97-90 in Eastern conference first round. Miami will host Game 7 on Sunday. Indiana Pacers also managed to win Game 6 to force decisive match. Pacers beat Toronto Raptors at home 101-83 and will travel to Canada for final game in their first round series.

Nico Rosberg won the pole position at today’s qualifications for Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix after his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire in Q2 after power unit failure for the second race in the row. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was second fastest but will drop five places for the race due to gearbox change. Because of that, Williams’ Valtteri Bottas will start from the first row with Kimi Raikkonen starting from the third place.

Western Conference semifinals started last night in NHL’s Stanley Cup and the hosts were successful taking 1-0 lead in each of the series. Dallas Stars beat St. Louis Blues 2-1 while San Jose Sharks defeated Nashville Predators 5-2.

Veszprem booked the ticket for their third straight EHF Champions League Final 4 after they eliminated Vardar in today’s second leg. The match in Hungary ended 30-30 with Veszprem wining first leg 29-26. Defending champion Barcelona is eliminated after failing to overturn the first leg 29-24 loss against Kiel. Barcelona won today 33-30 at home.
