Jorge Sampaoli confirmed as new Sevilla coach

Sevilla FC have confirmed that Jorge Sampaoli will replace Unai Emery as their new coach. Emery has decided to leave the club after winning third straight Europa League trophy with the Andalusian club and take over at Paris Saint-Germain.

CHILE

56-year old Argentinian never coached senior teams in his country – Sampaoli built his coaching career in Peru, Ecuador and Chile before stepping into the light as a head coach in 2011 with Universidad de Chile, with whom he won three league titles and the Copa Sudamericana. After this success, he took over Chilean national team in 2013. He led Chile to 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification and to nation’s first ever Copa America title in 2015, when they hosted the tournament and beat Argentina in the final. Sampaoli is so-called Bielsista, well known for his high-pressing and attacking tactics, introduced by Argentinian coach Marcelo Bielsa.

UNAI EMERY

Jorge Sampaoli has big shoes to fill as he replaces Unai Emery, who led the team to the three straight UEFA Europa League titles. Emery is the coach with the most wins at Sevilla – he has 106 victories in domestic and international competition with the club and with 205 matches on the bench, he is the second coach with the most games managed behind Joaquin Caparros. In the previous weeks Emery was mentioned as possible successor of Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid or Diego Simeone’s at Atletico Madrid, with whom he won Europa League in 2010, in case the Madrid giants were left with a vacancy on their benches. However, Emery grabbed a dream job with Paris Saint-Germain who sacked Laurent Blanc. The Spaniard now has the means to go for the Champions League crown after dominating in lesser European competition.

TRANSFERS

As expected after winning Europa League, Sevilla players will be in high demand and several transfers are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The first one to leave was midfielder Ever Banega who’ll join Inter Milan. Sevilla already signed his replacement, it is Japanese international and former Hannover 96 midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotake. Along Kiyotake Sevilla has also signed attacking midfielder Pablo Sarabia from Getafe. Andalusian side is also interested in Liverpool and Wales’s midfielder Joe Allen. As for the players leaving the club, veterans Jose Antonio Reyes and Fernando Llorente are free to find new homes with Lazio interested in the striker. It is rumored that Chelsea and Leicester City are interested in midfielder Steven N’Zonzi while Barcelona is tracking Sevilla’s best scorer Kevin Gameiro. In addition, Unai Emery is believed to have put demand from Paris Saint-Germain to sign midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak with Sevilla asking 45 million Euros for Polish international.
