Point guard tries to revive career in Spain
Formerly one of the best point guards in Europe Bo McCalebb is a new player of the Spanish Gran Canaria. The smallish American player with passport of Macedonia for the first time in his career will play in Spain, and last season has spent in French Limoges.
McCalebb trying to revive career that is on a downward trajectory for several years and Gran Canaria is the ideal environment. The Spanish league is one of the best in Europe, and Gran Canaria last few seasons plays a serious role in the Eurocup, the second tier competition in Europe. On the other hand, Gran Canaria in the past period sought an adequate replacement for Kevin Pangos who stepped up Zalgiris, and the club leaders considered McCalebb as the ideal solution.
Regardless of the somewhat weaker performances, McCalebb is still one of the quickest guards on the Old Continent, which thanks to its explosiveness easily achieves precedence over its guards. Although now has a few extra pounds, 31-year-old guard is able to make big problems to most opponents. Now he will have an additional motive to prove, as he will again play against the most attractive teams in Europe.
Bo McCalebb has made a breakthrough in his career playing for Partizan Belgrade, where he led the club to the Final Four of the Euroleague. It was followed by two amazing seasons in the Italian Montepaschi, where he experienced the peak of the career. During this period, he was simply unstoppable and when it was expected to finally try his hand in the NBA, somewhat unexpectedly joined the ranks of Fenerbahce, where he also had a big contribution, but only in the first season. However, after the arrival of Zeljko Obradovic on the bench of the Turkish club, McCalebb lost place in the team, because did not fit into the concept of a new coach. McCalebb tried in its 30th year to impose in the NBA, but never reached the level at which he played in Italy and Serbia.
Gran Canaria this summer carefully chose reinforcements and opted for experienced players. Legendary coach Aito Reneses left the club at the end of last season, so club is no longer alluring to young talents. McCalebb as one of the most experienced should be a team leader, and if fit well in the new environment, he could revive the old glory days.
